Statutory Inquiry Charity Commission discharges Al-Fatiha Global’s Interim Manager, following the satisfactory conclusion of his role in resolving the Charity’s governance issues as part of Statutory Inquiry. UPDATE: 2 DECEMBER 2015 Following a meeting of the Charity Commission’s Investigations, Monitoring and Enforcement team. The Charity Commission was satisfied that Michael King, Charity and Social Enterprise Consultant had fulfilled the terms of his appointment as the Interim Manager of Al-Fatiha Global. The Charities Commission Senior Investigator, Daniel Kington thanked Michael King and his colleagues at Stone King, for their part in resolving the Charity’s governance issues as part of the Statutory Inquiry and confirmed Michael King had been discharged from this appointment on Tuesday 2nd December 2015. Michael King, was appointed eleven months ago, to the inclusion of the Trustees to strengthen the governance of Al-Fatiha Global by the Charity Commission. He has since then worked tirelessly to support the Trustees and welcomed his discharge. Michael King said he is confident that Al-Fatiha Global will go from strength to strength under its current leadership, while accepting that the area in which Al-Fatiha Global operates in is becoming ever more difficult as well as being front page news. The Trustees for their part wish to thank Michael King, Hannah Kubie and their colleagues from Stone King for their unwavering support during the statutory inquiry. The Trustees wish to thank the Charities Commission for the care and consideration they exercised in selecting an interim manager that was simply ideal for Al-Fatiha Global. As a result of the support offered by Stone King and the Charities Commission during the statutory inquiry and the Al-Fatiha Global has developed considerable expertise in this area and for this we are very grateful. UPDATE: 23 DECEMBER 2014 On the 23rd December 2014, the commission used its powers under the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’) to appoint Michael King of Stone King as Interim Manager of the Charity. This appointment is with the inclusion of the Charity’s trustees as a temporary and protective measure. This means that the Interim Manager will work alongside the trustees, who remain in place and continue to have the full powers, legal duties and responsibilities of trustees. The Interim Manager’s main tasks include: appointing new trustees so there are sufficient numbers for meeting the quorum and the charity is able to operate constitutionally putting in place suitable policies and procedures including for sound governance and financial management including due diligence, monitoring and selection of its operational partners and conduct of its work overseas The Trustees welcomed the appointment of the Interim Manager and looked forward to working with the Charities Commission and the Interim Manager to strengthen Al-Fatiha Global. The Trustees were pleased that the Charities Commission had realised there was no substance to reports in the public domain alleging inappropriate links between the charity and individuals purportedly involved in supporting armed or other inappropriate activities in Syria. UPDATE 21 MARCH 2014 The Charity Commission opened a statutory inquiry into Al-Fatiha Global on the 21st March 2014. The inquiry was investigating concerns about the governance and financial management of the charity. The Commission had been monitoring the charity since 2013, and the inquiry, opened on 21 March 2014 to investigate: Whether the trustees are effectively discharging their duties under charity law with particular regard to the proper accounting for the income and expenditure of the charity, and the management of the charity in accordance with its governing document and the law. Regulatory issues in connection with reports in the public domain alleging inappropriate links between the charity and individuals purportedly involved in supporting armed or other inappropriate activities in Syria. As a result of the changing security situation on the Turkish-Syrian border during October 2013 UK-Syria Convoy. The Al-Fatiha Global December 2013 convoy will only go as far as the Turkish Border and all convoys leaving from the UK were suspended in Jan 2014. All future aid will either be sourced in Turkey or sent by container.
